Floating markets are a feast for the senses. There is no place as colorful, aromatic and filled with delicious food as these markets. As most of the food is sold from and eaten on boats or rafts and is an experience to remember.
Floating markets have a rich tradition in this area of Thailand. Most markets in this area were floating markets in the recent past as there were few roads and most people moved about by boat. Things have changed since then and many of these markets have moved on to land where they are easier to access. Several floating markets have survived mostly due to the fact that Thai people Love to relive their younger days and so this by visiting these markets. The Lamphya floating market is our favorite of these as it is vibrant and caters mostly to locals. Very few foreign tourists venture here lettingyou experience a very authentic market without touts or souvenir vendors which are common at more touristy floating markets. The market is situated in front of Lamphaya temple, on the Tha Chin River. The river at the market is teeming with various species of fish including giant catfish, black ear, and giant gourami. You can feed the fish with food purchased at the market. Boat cruises along Tha Chin River run from the market. The boats have chairs and tables and a floating picknick lunch with food purchased from the market can be easily arranged. This floating market is open only on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays from 10:00 to 16:00. The market is 18km from our house and can be visited by car, tuk tuk, motorbike or bicycle. There is no charge to visit the market.
